What Is Naturopathy or Naturopathic Medicine? Naturopathic philosophy is that human body has the innate ability to heal itself. It is based on treating the person as "whole", physically, emotionally and mentally; the harmonious function of all of these aspects are essential to recovery and disease prevention. Naturopathic Doctors strive to find the cause of disease, then treating the person considering their physical, mental, and emotional status. Naturopathic doctors (ND) treat by using the least invasive methods such as herbal medicine, nutritional supplements, homeopathy and craniosacral therapy, physical medicine, and hydrotherapy. They use these methods to stimulate body's own defense and immune system considering each individuals unique medical needs. NDs make unique and comprehensive treatment plans for their patient to treat diseases, enhance immune system, prevent future illnesses and promote healthy life style A visit to a naturopathic doctor would be very different from visiting your medical doctor. The first visit with a naturopath would take between one to one and half hour. The ND would take a very through history including family and medical history, asking about your diet, life style, supplements/herbs, stress and environmental exposures. Your ND would also look into your laboratory works and your regimen and make educated suggestions based on your needs and goals. While the goal of naturopaths is treating acute and chronic conditions using all natural healing modalities, the emphasis is prevention of diseases, promotion of living a healthy life style, and educating the patients.
